Delivery drivers are independent contractors, so the miles between accepting an order and finishing it are business miles. Driving to the first restaurant of a shift is usually a business mile too once you are on the app. The drive home is not.
Many drivers log by shift instead of by order: one row per shift with the starting area, the ending area, and the total miles from the odometer. That is a lot less typing and still gives the IRS the date, the purpose and the miles.
Setting it up
Use the weekly repeat tool if you work set days, then edit the shifts that changed. Or paste a column of dates and miles copied from your app's earnings export.
At 76 cents a mile after July 1, a driver doing 200 business miles a week has about $152 a week of deduction. Compare it with your real gas and repair costs before choosing the standard rate.
